INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Potentially dangerous winter weather is coming this weekend for many of you in TKE Nation. Before the storm hits, here are seven things you can do today to reduce the chance of serious damage or injury to your chapter or personal house:
- Keep heat on and at least 55°F throughout the house—especially in basements or unused rooms.
- Let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving and prevent pipes from freezing.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to reach plumbing.
- Know your water shutoff valve location—quick access can prevent thousands in damage.
- Avoid travel during peak storm hours and check in with each other often.
- Charge your phones and backup batteries in case of power outages.
- Check fire sprinkler systems and make sure insulation or heat tape is in place if required.
Longer term solution is weather proofing. It’s essential for maintaining a safe, comfortable and efficient fraternity house. By sealing drafts, adding insulation, and upgrading heating systems, fraternities can improve energy efficiency, reduce utility costs, and protect the building from damage caused by snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.
Proper weather proofing also safeguards the health and comfort of residents by preventing drafts, mold, and cold spots that can lead to illnesses or discomfort. Key steps include inspecting roofs, sealing windows and doors, insulating pipes, and servicing heating systems. These efforts ensure a warm, safe, and welcoming environment while preserving the property and fostering brotherhood. Winter proofing is an investment in the house’s longevity and the well-being of its members.
