Frater Elmer joined a local colony at Morehead State University in 1968 and played a key role in chartering the Mu-Sigma Chapter of TKE at Morehead State University. While an undergraduate, he served as Prytanis of the newly established chapter.
Frater Elmer took the skills and leadership he learned in TKE and used them to achieve the position of President and Owner of Interactive Learning Systems, Inc. headquartered in Chamblee, GA. His company provides technology skills and English training for a global community. In 1989, his organization was named the “fastest private growing company in the U.S.” in 1989.
Frater Elmer was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst and Young in 1990. He was a Founding Director of the Georgia Primary Bank and served on its board from 2007-2025. Frater Smith served on the Morehead State University Foundation Board from 2000-2007 and in 2018 the College of Business was renamed the Elmer R. Smith College of Business.
He has won numerous awards in the Fraternity including the TKE Triangle Award (1992), Volunteer of the Month (2009), the Grand Prytanis Key Leader Award (2009), the Fraternity for Life Award (2011), Grand Prytanis Award (2019), and Order of the Golden Eagle (2022). Frater Elmer was inducted in the Circle of Excellence (2013) and Southern Order of Honor (2017).
A Life Loyal Teke, Frater Smith has permanently endowed the Elmer and Donna Smith Regional Leadership Conference in Atlanta and later played the leading role in endowing the Charles R. Walgreen Jr. TKE Leadership Academy with a $1 million gift.
He served as a Director of the TKE Foundation Board (2007-10), Secretary/Treasurer (2010-2014), Vice Chairman (2014-16), and as Chairman of the TKE Foundation Board from (2016-2020). In 2020, he was named a Chairman Emeritus for the TKE Foundation. Frater Elmer has donated over $2.5 million to TKE throughout his lifetime.
